Dangerous Soloing Advice

When I was growing up, I would ask anyone and everyone what they thought of my solos after a performance.

Most of the time, I was fishing for compliments to boost my ego – I thought I sucked 99% of the time.

But I was also desperate for advice as to how to make my solos better.

There are two major problems with all of the above.

  1. Concerning yourself with the opinions of others is a dangerous game. You fall into the trap of playing to please instead of focusing on making music that you think sounds good.

  2. Most people give terrible advice. Even musicians you might admire don't have a clue how to articulate the stuff they're doing that makes them sound so good, let alone what you should do to improve your playing.

That said, there are some good teachers out there that know how to coach well. Teachers that know what to say, when to say it, and how.

It's a skill I've been honing for over fifteen years and bring to the table in full force for my students enrolled in my online courses.

One such course is Making the Changes. When you join, you'll get free access to our exclusive online community in which I provide personal feedback and critiques for students who post their assignments and solos.

We even do live soloing critiques on the check-in calls for those who are interested in strutting their stuff in real time (performing live is most definitely not required).

Speaking of which, our next live check-in call is next Tuesday. If you can't make it, no worries – you can watch the recording at your convenience along with over ten hours of previous check-in call footage.

Anyway, the enrollment period for Making the Changes closes at the end of the week. If you're ready to dedicate six weeks of study to make real improvements in your improvising, make sure to secure your spot at the link below.

See you in class,

Jeff
