Agnostic Keys Will Save Your Soul

Settle down, settle down. I’m not talking about religion here.

This is about key-agnosticism, people!

That’s right, you heard it here it first – I am key-agnostic.

So, what on earth does that mean?

It means my goal in music is to be able to play anything in any key.

We’re talkin’ piano voicings, D’Angelo songs, Herbie Hancock solos and everything in between.

Now, I’ve got good news, bad news, and some more good news for ya.

The first bit of good news is that key-agnosticism is most definitely something YOU can attain, too.

The bad news is that it’s a struggle, especially when just starting out.

But the real good news is that being able to play anything in any key gets a heck of a lot easier with practice and experience.

Why?

Because there are only twelve keys!

Think of it this way:

Imagine you’re in a room with twelve strangers. You need to get to know them – memorize their names, their likes and dislikes, etc.

At first, it’s a lot to remember. You might get mixed up. You might get discouraged.

But after a while, you learn everyone’s faces, names, and personalities such that you don’t have to think twice about who’s who.

And because no new people are coming into the room, getting to know the same twelve individuals becomes easier and easier.

Now, regardless of whether or not that analogy makes any sense, let’s get practical and go over the secret to becoming key-agnostic:

Think in numbers, not note names.

  • In the key of C Major, an E is not an E – it’s a 3.

  • The chords for D’Angelo’s “Send It On” aren’t Am7 Gm11 C7sus FMaj7, they’re IIIm7 IIm11 V7sus IMaj7.

  • My favorite voicing for Am11 is not A E B C G D, it’s 1 5 9 b3 b7 11.

I call that last one a chord recipe by the way. It’s a number-based formula for a chord voicing.

And what’s great about using these recipes is that you can apply them to any major scale, which means that instead of knowing just one voicing, you know twelve!

I’m bringing this up now because for the next two days, I’m going to be giving a free copy of The Chord Cookbook to anyone who orders Sick Chords Volume 1.
